Testimonial Questions to Ask Customers

“Could you write a testimonial?” usually gets a vague “Great service!”. A good question gets a specific story. Here are 25 that work, grouped by what you want the testimonial to show.

How to use these questions

Pick one question (two at most) and put it where customers will see it before they start writing — for example as the title of your testimonial form. Open questions (“what”, “how”) get stories; yes/no questions get one-word answers.

On a Wallsy collection page, the title and intro text are yours to write, so your chosen question is the first thing customers read.

Before and after

  1. What was going on before you started working with us?
  2. What made you decide to try [product/service]?
  3. What’s different now?
  4. What would you tell yourself before you started?
  5. How did you solve [problem] before, and what changed?

Results

  1. What result are you most happy with?
  2. How much time (or money) has it saved you?
  3. What’s one thing you can do now that you couldn’t before?
  4. How did your customers or team react?
  5. If you had to put a number on the result, what would it be?

Handling doubts (objections)

  1. What almost stopped you from buying?
  2. What were you worried about, and how did it turn out?
  3. How was getting started compared with what you expected?
  4. Was it worth the price? Why?
  5. What surprised you most?

The experience

  1. What was it like working with us?
  2. What’s your favourite part of [product/service]?
  3. Is there a moment or person that stood out?
  4. How would you describe us to a friend in one sentence?
  5. What do you use [product] for most?

Recommendation

  1. Who would you recommend us to, and why?
  2. Why would you choose us again?
  3. What would you say to someone thinking about trying us?
  4. Why did you pick us over other options?
  5. If we disappeared tomorrow, what would you miss?

Real estate agents

Events and communities

“What was the most useful thing you took away?” · “Who would you bring with you next time?”

More ideas for each of these, with where to show the answers, are on our use case pages.

Questions for video testimonials

The same questions work on camera, but keep it to three, and send them in advance so people can think first: “What was going on before?”, “What changed?” and “Who would you recommend us to?”. Wallsy collects written testimonials; if you need video, a video-first tool is a better fit — see our comparisons.

Questions to avoid

  • Yes/no questions — “Did you like it?” gets “Yes”.
  • Leading questions — “How amazing was our service?” produces testimonials that read as fake.
  • Long lists — five questions feel like homework. One or two is plenty.
